Pastoral Care

Abbey Community College aims to promote the moral, spiritual and personal development of students. Our pastoral care team, including a full time chaplain, ensures that each student enjoys a strong sense of belonging. Listening to students, and caring for their needs, is at the heart of our Pastoral Care Programme.

 The Meitheal System

The Meitheal System's aim is simple. It is to provide a listening ear for all 1st Year students. Meitheal Group Leaders, who have participated in regular group meetings, are available to be approached by a 1st year if he/she has a problem or opinion they would like to express, regarding the school. This greatly boosts their confidence, as they know they need not dwell on a problem alone, and also that their own viewpoint counts. The transition from Primary to Secondary Education, which can be often difficult, is made much easier and leaves the student to enjoy their first exciting year here!

Spectrum is a peer support group for students who have been bereaved through death or parental separation. Groups of 3-6 students meet weekly for 12 weeks. There are trained facilitators with each group. This is a terrifically beneficial programme for students as they get to share their personal experiences in a safe, confidential setting. The programme runs once every year, at the end of which, students and facilitators enjoy a day out.. Anyone with queries about Spectrum, every Tuesday after school. Students are helped particularly by the realization that they are not the only ones who have lost someone they love.
